We got off to a pretty early start again and headed to the main "attraction" of Dachau, a World War II concentration camp (outlined in red in the picture). There was a sizeable collection of pictures and information about how this place was used during the war. Very sobering. *** This presented an entirely different side of Germany than what we experienced. It was hard to believe this was the same country (but obviously very different people).
There were something like 40 or 50 bunkers, each originally meant to hold at most few hundred people but ultimately each held 1600-1800 people. *** The man who tried to assassinate Hitler was held here.
More than 30,000 people were executed here and cremated.
