Just north of Flagstaff it started to seriously try and rain. Low overhanging clouds, mist, and pretty cold temps. We were definitely out of dress with shorts on. *** We decided to still stop at Wupatki indian ruins. They were pretty neat (sorry no pictures- too cold and wet). Note the black "dirt"... more on that below.
We took a loop road down to Sunset Crater, a volcano that last erupted 800 years ago. As a result the entire area was covered in black lava dirt (I'm pretty sure that is not the scientific name for it).
I'm glad they put a sign up pointing out exactly where the crater is... because with the low hanging clouds you would never have known. The ground elevation here was around 6000 feet as I recall and the cone extended up another 1000 feet, of which we could see maybe 25 feet.
