Again the scale is difficult to appreciate here. Many tens of feet of snow on that ledge. At the top the window was blowing the snow into "snow dunes".
Finally nearing the top. Really amazing they could even build this up here. This is the highest altitude cable car station in Europe. I kept telling Gina that this is really a unique experience because short of climbing the Matterhorn or something similar, it is almost impossible to reach a peak such as this. *** The peak is at 12,684 ft, about 1 1/2 miles above Zermatt and the highest I've ever been while still on the ground. The Matterhorn itself climbs another 2000 ft to top out at 14,692 ft.
At some point we transitioned from a feeling of "going up" to "being on top"... everywhere you looked all you could see was snow capped mountain peaks.
